Rabab Fatima was born in 1991 into a noble family in Kannauj, India. She was born on a perfect day. Sunny skies greeted her, and there weren’t even a few clouds in the sky. Her mother named him Rabab (The White Cloud), which means “fun” or “joy.”
For more than two centuries, her family has guarded the secrets of Attar, the traditional oil-based perfume of India. Consequently, she was destined to carry on the legacy and tradition of our family. Her father, who worked tirelessly on his wood-burning stove day after day, taught him how to distill essential oils and floral extracts from an early age.
The smell of sandalwood and rose used to fill the air as her father distilled flowers in his olfactory like a setup used for making attar.
The city of Kannauj is home to some of the world’s most famous perfumeries. Recent years, however, have seen an exponential increase in the demand for traditional Indian oil-based perfumes and floral extracts. Since these techniques became more popular, many perfumeries started using chemical-based imitations. There are many artisanal perfumeries in Kannauj that are being replaced by cheaper, more convenient chemical distillation methods, but not all of them. We are still using ancient techniques to make perfume oils and floral extracts that last for generations and smell like gold.
Due to high production costs, the traditional attar industry in Kannauj is losing ground rapidly. In the late 1990s, there were around 650 perfumeries. There are only about 100 or so people left who can make Attar using the traditional method.
As a child, she grew up in a family of perfumers. Their family business was started by his great grandfather, who used to sell in bulk. With the passing of time and technological advances, the business started to fade. To preserve their family’s history and save this dying art of conventional extraction, she founded Zofla in 2015.
As a solopreneur, she soon took on the role of the company’s founder. She listed all our products on eCommerce websites such as Amazon and Flipkart and launched our retail venture.
As an application architect, Shakir Alam wanted a way out of his boring job. So, he joined him in starting Zofla. They thought this would be their chance to accomplish something great together and make money doing what they loved: perfumes, essential oils, and other aromatic products.
