Calling Taliban the current reality in Afghanistan, Russia said Wednesday it’s for India to decide to what extent it wants to be involved in the country. Responding to queries on the current security situation in Afghanistan, the Russian embassy here said that after the US withdrawal from the war-torn country there can be no military intervention by any foreign power.
Asked about India’s concerns over the possible use of Afghan territory for carrying out terrorist activities, Russian deputy chief of mission, Roman Babushkin, said while Moscow was prepared to deal with terrorism in Afghanistan, this issue shouldn’t be seen as separate from other problems that the country is facing in the form of issues like drug-trafficking. He acknowledged India was a “big player” in Afghanistan.
A Taliban delegation that visited Moscow last week had assured Russia that it won’t allow Afghanistan to be used for attacks on others. Russia continues to strongly back serious engagement with the Taliban with President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Wednesday asking the government in Kabul to start “proper negotiations” with the armed group and not just “pay lip service to the idea of talks”.
“It’s up to India to analyse the situation and go ahead according to the current realities. India is a big player in Afghanistan and has always been supportive of the government in Kabul,” said Babushkin, talking to journalists here.
He was joined by Russian ambassador Nikolay Kudashev who said both India and Russia were supportive of intra-Afghan talks based on commitments of the parties to ensure that the future government is inclusive.
“It’s critically important to support Afghans in making their country independent, sovereign, united and democratic. After the Western troops started their speedy withdrawal, regional efforts are becoming even more important,” he said, adding the SCO meeting in Tajikistan and the upcoming connectivity conference in Uzbekistan offered opportunities to address the situation.
“Taliban is a current reality in Afghanistan. It is a party in the intra-Afghan talks which we believe should be a solution for normalisation and establishment of an inclusive government that should be involving all major ethnic groups,” said Babushkin, in an interaction with journalists.
Babushkin also said there was no need for any foreign military involvement to deal with the situation. “At least, we are not considering it. Military activities without a political process are worrying as instability can easily cross the borders,” he said.
