Despite the high number of Covid-19 fatalities in recent months, the death rate in the second Covid wave in India remains lower than the first. However, the secondwave death rate is still climbing with several states continuing to report a relatively high number of casualties.
The case fatality rate (CFR or death rate) in the first wave was1.41%, if March1 this year is taken as the beginning of the new wave. So far, four-and-a-half months after it began, the CFR in the second wave is at 1.28%.
The overall CFR in India stands at 1.33%. In July so far, a death rate of 2.12% has been recorded. Last month, the rate was even higher at 3.07%. One of the reasons for the high CFR since May-end has been the high number of “backlog” deaths reported, mainly in Maharashtra, but also in smaller numbers in Bihar, MP, Goa, Uttarakhand, Odisha and Kerala.
So far, 2,55,923 deaths have been recorded in the second wave (since March 1), nearly 1 lakh more than the toll in the first wave (1.57 lakh). Meanwhile, on Friday, India reported 38,019 fresh cases and 559 deaths from the virus.
