LUCKNOW: BJP national president JP Nadda on Friday termed Varanasi, the parliamentary seat of PM Narendra Modi, as the origin point for a new brand of politics that holds sway at the national level. He was speaking at the inaugural session of the UP BJP executive committee which was held virtually.
Nadda’s observation came a day after PM Modi visited Varanasi to dedicate a host of development projects. The visit was seen as a precursor to BJP’s election campaign for the high-stake UP assembly elections due next year. Modi also invoked Ayodhya and Mathura to term them as cultural cities of India.
The BJP president, at the same pitch, lauded UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for putting the state on an accelerated growth trajectory. He also said that the work done by the UP government in mitigating the pandemic was indeed appreciable. This also came close on the heels of PM Modi appreciating CM Yogi for his work, in what was seen as an endorsement of Yogi as party’s face in the forthcoming UP assembly elections due next year.
Nadda said that the party workers will have to remember how the state was “infested” with the politics of appeasement a few years ago. “Appeasing one particular caste and community to target others had become the order of the day,” he said, in an apparent barb at the opposition, mainly the SP and the BSP. “The state had turned into a hub of corruption, nepotism and anarchy,” Nadda charged. “In contrast, in the past four years, UP has become one of the leading states in the country,” he said.
The BJP president also did not miss the chance to mention the recent victories in the Zila Panchayat chairperson and Block Pramukh elections, in what marked the party escalating its presence in the rural areas which determine the electoral fortunes of any party. “This will help the party in contributing its bit in development at the grass-roots level,” he said. Nadda said that the rural local bodies’ election results were a key pointer to people’s continued support for BJP and disenchantment with both the SP and the BSP. “While the opposition has been given a message to sit at home we have been asked to work and perform,” he said.
Nadda said that it was the strategy of PM Modi which helped the country cope with the deadly virus like Corona which, otherwise, had left a host of countries including the US and many of those in Europe, helpless. Nadda asked the party workers to ensure that the achievement of the BJP government percolated down to the people. Nadda said that it was because of the efforts of PM Modi that the oxygen supply was scaled up from 900 metric tonnes to over 9000 MT during the second wave of pandemic and supplied to the various states with the help of aircraft, ships and trains.
The BJP chief categorically hit out at the opposition for stoking rumours in the name of politics over pandemic. “While the country came up with vaccines against the virus, some political leaders were fuelling factually wrong narratives to misguide the people,” he said, launching a frontal attack on the opposition which has been seeking to push BJP against the wall over alleged mismanagement of Covid.
“One of the `neta’ from UP termed it as a BJP vaccine,” he said, in an apparent swipe at SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. “It is another fact that his father (Mulayam Singh Yadav) got inoculated, after which he himself agreed for getting vaccinated,” Nadda said, adding that by giving irresponsible statements, the opposition leaders have only shown their “real stature”. “Can these ‘netas’ take care of UP,” he asked. Nadda also termed the opposition leaders of being impelled by `political tourism’ as elections draw close.
The BJP chief said that the country will be in a position to inoculate the maximum number of citizens by December this year. He claimed that while Covishield will be able to manufacture 50 crore vaccines, Covaxin will produce another 40 crore vaccines for India. Likewise, Sputnik and Zydus Cadila will be able to roll out 10 crore and 5 crore vaccines, respectively. He asked the party workers to help the government in getting people vaccinated through monitoring and encouraging them. Nadda also urged the party workers, MPs and MLAs to ensure that the scheme of Ayushman Bharat, envisaging medical cover to the needy, and facility of free food grains, reaches the targeted people.
