NEW DELHI: An anonymous email to the anti-ragging helpline on Sunday claimed that for the past few days the first-year students of the Government Medical College, Amritsar, are being subjected to ragging. The national anti-ragging helpline has registered a complaint and has forwarded the same to the college authorities on Monday.
Rajiv Devgan, principal of the medical college, while confirming the complaint, told TOI that the institute has immediately secured a week’s worth of CCTV footage, forwarded the email to police and prima facie the incident seems to be an inter-group rivalry. “This looks like a fraudulent email by a group of students. There was a function on campus which one of the groups was opposed to. We have checked the CCTV footage and found nothing incriminating. We will look into the matter. Someone seems to have misused the platform,” he said.
The mail, a copy of which is with TOI, claims that students are being asked to remove their clothes and perform actions meant to shame them.
The person in the email said he is keeping identities of the students hidden.
In the email, the student said: “Am a first-year MBBS student. I want to raise a complaint against our immediate seniors for ragging. For the past few days, they call us at 1am by saying this is an intro for freshers. And then start humiliating us… by using abusive words and phrases.” He then described the graphic actions students were forced to perform.
