Addressing the rising mental health problems among marginalized communities

Mental health problems are rising exponentially among all sections of society today. We hear a lot about the falling mental health of people who work in corporate jobs and competitive business environment. Unfortunately, not many people are aware about the mental health issues and struggles of people who come from underprivileged sections of society. However, there are a few people and organizations who are working for the welfare and upliftment of the most vulnerable sections of society.

We talked to Mr. Ramesh Chaurasia, the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Adarsh Chaurasia Mahasabha. This social welfare organization is known to selflessly work for the upliftment of all vulnerable sections of society and members of the Chaurasia community. They work on multiple fronts including education, health awareness, career counselling, employment, agriculture, mental health issues, sanitation and more.

We asked Mr. Ramesh Chaurasia about how members of marginalized communities are more likely to suffer from high stress and other mental health struggles.

He said, “Our organization leaves no stone unturned when it comes to helping people from our community who are facing any kind of problems. There are a lot of things which can be done to ensure that people from all sections of the community are living in harmony and are at peace. All we need is the will for collective welfare. Poverty brings a lot of stress and not everyone can handle it all the time. This is why we are trying to find ways to eliminate or reduce stress among all people by providing them ways to cope with any stress or anxiety that they might have. Imagine the level of stress that a farmer and his family have after their crop has failed. Imagine the level of stress of a family where the main earner has lost employment due to prolonged illness. The main objective of our team is to increase the level of awareness among all people when it comes to issues pertaining to mental health. It is known that lack of awareness about mental health and depression is a bigger problem because it is due to low awareness that people tend to ignore existing conditions and not seek treatment or solutions. We want to create a positive environment along with acceptance among all community members.”

The Akhil Bharatiya Adarsh Chaurasia Mahasabha organizes regular mental health awareness camps where the top mental health experts from all around the country are invited. Here, all members of the community are given a chance to discuss their problems with experts who can help them overcome the mental struggle that they are going through. These events are organized in such a way that even one on one sessions can be offered to those who need professional guidance. This has helped a lot of people from impoverished sections of the community in getting the best mental health services without needing to go anywhere. This has certainly brought hope in the lives of people who were not exposed to the latest developments and improvements in treatments for mental health. The organization promotes community meetings so that there can be more communication among people.

We talked to Mr. Ramesh Lakhulal Chaurasia about how these community meetings create a difference and help people maintain better social relationships. He said, “We believe that a community should be close knit because it is the love and support of our loved ones which gives us the strength to fight adversity and get out of difficult times. This is why our organization encourages more community meetings where all members of the community are invited. It is encouraged that people of different age groups interact with each other so that they can learn from each other’s experience. Many times, just talking to someone makes us feel better. For many people, just knowing that they are not alone and there is someone to listen can make all the difference. A lot of mental health issues rise due to isolation. In these modern times, it is ironical that even after being connected due to mobile phones and the internet, we are more isolated personally. This is why human to human interaction is the best thing for our mental health. Healthy human communication is the foundation of a healthy and functioning community.”The efforts of Mr. Ramesh Chaurasia and the team of the Akhil Bharatiya Adarsh Chaurasia Mahasabha are targeted towards all vulnerable sections of society. Their work has helped thousands of people all across India. Their efforts continue to bring a change to many people’s lives.
